Got a layoff notice? Your first week

  1. File for unemployment as soon as your job ends

File with the state where you worked. See unemployment benefits by state.

  2. Ask when your final paycheck will be paid

Federal law does not require an immediate final paycheck, but some states do. If it is late, contact your state labor department or the Wage and Hour Division: Last paycheck — U.S. Department of Labor .

  3. Keep your health coverage

Losing job-based coverage can let you enroll in a Marketplace plan outside open enrollment, usually within 60 days: Special Enrollment Period — HealthCare.gov . You may also be able to keep your plan through COBRA: COBRA — USAGov .

  4. Use free Rapid Response and job center help

State Rapid Response teams and American Job Centers offer job search help, career counseling and training at no cost: Rapid Response — U.S. Department of Labor · American Job Centers .

  5. Start your search and add income

Open jobs link straight to each employer's application page, and the step-by-step income paths show ways to earn while you look.

A WARN notice is the advance notice an employer files with the state before a plant closing or mass layoff. Each row is what the employer reported to the state; the number of workers and the dates can change later. JoRoute does not contact or verify with the companies listed. WARN Act — U.S. Department of Labor .
