Benchmark answer for this question

Fictional example for learning only. It is not your experience; replace every detail with facts that are true for you.

My previous role ended when the company reorganized and closed our regional support team in March, along with about twenty other positions. I valued my three years there, especially coordinating customer requests across two shifts and training new hires on our ticket system. Since then I've completed a short course in customer-success basics, and I'm now looking for a role where I can use that coordination experience with a larger team — which is what drew me to this one.

Why this example works

It stays factual and neutral, avoids blame, notes what the candidate valued and moves forward to this role.

  • Looks forward: “Since then I've completed a short course”, “I'm now looking for a role where I can use that coordination experience”
  • No blame: A neutral, factual reason
  • Avoids generic phrases: Concrete experience instead of labels
  • Claims are supported: Three years, two shifts, a completed course
  • Length: About 80 words — roughly 35 seconds

What you can learn from it

State the real reason briefly; do not copy the fictional circumstance if it is not yours.

Make it yours — with true details only

Use your real reason in one neutral sentence. If you were let go for performance, say it briefly and focus on what you learned and changed — never invent a layoff.

From generic to evidence

Generic: “My manager was terrible and the company didn't value anyone, so I left.”
With evidence: “My role ended in a regional reorganization in March. I valued coordinating requests across two shifts there, and I'm now looking for a role where I can use that with a larger team.”

Mistakes that cost points

  • Criticizing the former boss or company — Stay neutral and factual
  • A long story — One sentence, then move on
  • Lying about the reason — Give the true reason briefly
  • No forward link — End with why this role
