What the work involves

  • Deliver projects or lessons on time and as described
  • Write clear proposals or tutor profiles
  • Agree scope, price and deadline before starting
  • Keep communication and payments on the platform
  • Track income and expenses for taxes

Your step-by-step plan

Pick one above to see its exact sign-up steps. Showing the general steps; every button opens the page where you act.

  1. Step 1: Pick one skill and gather proof

Clients and parents hire proof, not promises. Pick one skill you can deliver this week — writing, design, bookkeeping, a language, a school subject — and collect three real samples, results or references.

Have ready: Three samples, results or references · Degrees, licenses or certificates, if any

Done when: You have one skill and three pieces of proof you are allowed to share.

  2. Step 2: Create your profile on the official site

Sign up on the platform's own page and fill every section honestly. Pick a platform above to see exactly where to start and what it keeps from each payment.

Done when: Your profile is submitted or live.

  3. Step 3: Learn the payment scams before your first client

The FTC warns about "employers" who send a check and ask you to send part of the money back, or who ask you to pay for starter kits, training or certifications. Keep messages and payments inside the platform.

Done when: You will refuse any client who asks to pay outside the platform or by check.

  4. Step 4: Practise the client call

A first call decides most projects. Practise explaining what you deliver, by when, and how you handle changes — out loud, with one real example each.

Done when: You can answer the questions on this page in under two minutes each.

  5. Step 5: Set money aside for tax from the first payout

The IRS says all income is taxable unless the law says otherwise — even if you never get a Form 1099-K. If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you owe self-employment tax (15.3%: 12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) and file Schedule SE. Keep receipts all year: they help you deduct certain expenses.

Done when: You move a share of every payout to a separate tax pot and keep a simple income and expense log.

Finish line

You are now waiting for a client or student to message you. Reply inside the platform, quote clearly, and start only after the contract or booking is in place.

Interview questions to practise

JoRoute practice questions. Answer each with one real example.

Walk me through a project like mine that you finished.

They are listening for: One real example with the result, not a list of skills.

What exactly will I get, and by when?

They are listening for: A clear scope and a date you can keep.

What happens if I want changes?

They are listening for: How many revisions are included and what costs extra.

(Tutoring) How would you help a student who is falling behind?

They are listening for: A concrete plan: find the gap, practise, check progress.
