Prepare interview answers from real experience
Use the STAR method with your own examples, prepare questions for the employer, and follow up well.
- Who this is for
- You have an interview coming up — in person, by phone or video.
- You will have
- Five ready STAR stories, three questions for the employer and a follow-up note.
- Time
- 60–90 minutes
Before you start
- The posting and your match table
- Your confirmed achievements in JoRoute
Steps
- Pick five real stories
Choose examples that match the posting: a problem you solved, a time you worked with others, a mistake you fixed, a result you are proud of, a time you learned fast.
- Shape each with STAR
Situation (context), Task (your responsibility), Action (what you did), Result (what happened). Keep each to about two minutes.
- Prepare questions for the employer
Ask about the first 90 days, how success is measured, the team, and the next steps in the process.
- Check the setup
For video: test camera, sound and the meeting link from the official invitation. In person: route, time, and what to bring.
- Follow up within a day
Send a short thank-you note that mentions one thing you discussed.
- Watch for red flags
Interviews only by chat app, requests for bank details or fees before an offer, or pressure to decide immediately are warning signs — check the message first.
Example
STAR answer skeleton filled from a confirmed achievement:
S: Our support queue had long waits. T: I was asked to improve response times. A: I redesigned the triage rules in Zendesk and trained the team. R: Average first response went from 9 to 2 hours.
Illustrative example — every part must come from your real experience.

Common mistakes
- Memorising scripts instead of knowing your stories
- Saying 'we' for everything — explain your part
