Tell me about a time you helped a less experienced engineer get unstuck.

Read first: a sample answer

Fictional sample answer written by JoRoute to show the shape of a strong answer. Do not copy it: replace every detail with what is true for you.

In 2023 a new junior engineer on my team was stuck for two days on a failing deployment. Mentoring her, I asked her to explain the error out loud rather than fixing it myself. I showed her how to read the pipeline logs and pointed to the one line that mattered. She found the missing environment variable herself in twenty minutes. After that I set up a weekly 30-minute session. After I added those sessions, her deployment questions fell from five a week to none by the second month, and she started helping the next new hire. That is what leadership and mentoring means to me.

Use only details that are true for you. The benchmark below is fictional.
