Close a skill gap at low cost
Turn a missing requirement into a small learning plan and a project you can show.
- Who this is for
- You found skills that real postings ask for and you don't have yet — or you are changing careers.
- You will have
- A learning plan for one or two skills, with free or low-cost resources and a practice project as evidence.
- Time
- 20 minutes to plan; learning time varies
Before you start
- The gap list from a posting comparison or your role worksheet
- A realistic number of hours per week
Steps
- Choose one or two gaps that matter
Prefer gaps that appear in several real postings and are 'required', not just 'preferred'.
- Check what the skill involves
O*NET lists related skills and tools for an occupation. It helps you learn the right thing instead of everything.
- Pick free or low-cost options first
Official training finders, public libraries, community colleges and apprenticeships (paid on-the-job training) are good places to start. Read the conditions and costs before enrolling.
- Plan a small practice project
Something you can finish in 2–4 weeks and show: a spreadsheet, a short report, a documented process. Add it to your profile as evidence.
- Set dates and review weekly
Write a target date and check progress weekly. Adjust if it is too much.
Example
Gap → plan:
Gap: Excel (required in 6 of 10 postings). Plan: 3 h/week for 4 weeks using free library courses; project: budget tracker for a community group; add to profile with what I built.

Learning plan
Common mistakes
- Paying for an expensive course before trying free options
- Believing a certificate guarantees a job
