Read a job posting and pick your evidence

Break a posting into requirements and match each one to a real example from your profile.

Who this is for
You found a posting you want to apply to.
You will have
A requirement-by-requirement match table you can use for your resume, cover letter and interview.
Time
20–30 minutes per posting

Before you start

  • The posting (open it in JoRoute to see its source and freshness)
  • Your confirmed items in JoRoute

Steps

  1. Confirm the posting is current and official

Open the job in JoRoute: it shows the employer's board, when it was last verified, and links to the official application page.

  2. List each requirement on its own line

Copy the required and preferred items into a list. Split combined lines ('Excel and SQL') into separate requirements.

  3. Compare with your profile

On the job page, JoRoute lists skills from the posting that appear in your confirmed items and those that don't. It is a keyword comparison, not a judgement of fit.

  4. Pick your strongest example for each

Use one specific example per requirement — ideally one with a result. Leave a requirement blank rather than stretch the truth.

  5. Decide what to say about gaps

For a missing 'preferred' item, you can mention related experience or that you are learning it. For a missing 'required' item, reconsider or prepare first.

Example

Match table:

Customer support experience → 'Answered ~40 emails/day at Acme Logistics (2021–2025)' Zendesk → 'Daily use; built macros for common questions' SQL (preferred) → gap — learning basics; no claim made

Illustrative example — invented for this guide.

Requirement → evidence table

Common mistakes

  • Copying the posting's words without examples behind them
  • Claiming a requirement you don't meet
  • Applying through a link sent by a stranger instead of the official page

Limits

  • The comparison only finds skill keywords JoRoute recognises; it does not read meaning or predict hiring.
