Everything and Nothing
A vague listing contains a job code the official careers page does not recognize.
The listing promised a “fast-paced environment,” a “self-starter,” and someone willing to “wear many hats.” It said the successful candidate would perform “other duties as assigned.”
Daniel still could not explain what the person would actually do each day. There was no clear reporting manager, no useful description of the first three months, and no explanation of the hiring process. The job code—NX-8841—was absent from the company’s official careers page.
Vague language did not prove fraud. Employers sometimes use generic templates or publish outdated listings. Daniel needed stronger evidence than dislike of the wording.
He compared the listing with a legitimate role on the same company website. The legitimate listing used a different application domain and described its responsibilities concretely. The suspicious listing appeared to combine unrelated tasks.
Daniel recorded the discrepancies without adding conclusions: no matching job code, unclear duties, and an application link that differed from the official route.
He sent a short question: “Could you confirm this role and job code through your official careers page?”
The recruiter did not answer. Instead, a new document arrived with a salary figure far higher than Daniel expected and a deadline that night.
The attractive number brought back the fear of missing out. But a salary promise was not evidence that the job existed.
Daniel saved the document and examined it before replying.
Put it to work
- Understand a job before you applyWhat to ask about duties, reporting lines and pay when a listing is vague.
- Find jobsListings from employers' official job boards, each linking to the employer's own application page.
- How JoRoute worksWhere listings come from, how they are checked and when they are removed.
Fiction. This is a work of fiction. Daniel and every person, message and event in the story are invented. It does not describe a real JoRoute user, and no real employer, recruiter or platform is involved. Job code NX-8841 is made up too.
