The Skills They Wanted
A former colleague receives a similar message. Daniel spots repeated wording and explains his transferable skills honestly.
Daniel’s former colleague sent a screenshot: “This looks familiar. I got something like it last week.”
The job title and company name differed, but the opening phrase matched Daniel’s messages, including the unusual punctuation. The job code NX-8841 appeared near the bottom.
Daniel compared the listings. One described customer support; the other operations coordination. Yet both contained an identical sentence and the same typo.
The similarities suggested that the listings might share a template or source. They did not identify who created them. A copied template, a recruiting agency, or an impersonator could produce similar wording. Daniel kept the possibilities open.
Meanwhile, he reviewed a legitimate operations role. Its requirements did not align perfectly with his previous job title, and he had nearly dismissed it.
He listed the employer’s needs in one column and real examples from his own work in another: maintaining accurate records, tracking open requests, and following up across teams. He marked skills he still needed to learn rather than disguising the gaps.
The exercise gave him a clearer story for his application. It also reminded him not to let the suspicious recruiter define his entire search.
His colleague sent one more screenshot. Another job seeker had received the same code.
Three people, different roles, one repeated code. It was a stronger pattern—but still not an identity.

Fiction. This is a work of fiction. Daniel and every person, message and event in the story are invented. It does not describe a real JoRoute user, and no real employer, recruiter or platform is involved. Job code NX-8841 is made up too.
