HR Perspective
Explore what an interviewer may assess, the answer evidence a prompt asks for, and follow-ups that may probe further. This guide describes possibilities, not private thoughts or hiring predictions.
HRQ-052 · Difficult Questions & Career Transitions · US practice content; disclosure and accommodation questions can be fact- and jurisdiction-specific.
Can you explain a gap or an unexpected change in your work history?
What an interviewer may assess
Accuracy, concise communication, relevant readiness, and ability to set appropriate privacy boundaries
Evidence a strong answer can show
- A truthful high-level explanation
- relevant recent skills or preparation
- a direct link to availability or role requirements when applicable.
Potential weak-answer patterns
- Apologizing for personal circumstances
- fabricating work
- oversharing medical or family details
- treating every gap as something that needs a defense.
Behavioral rubric
1: misleading or unnecessarily revealing; 3: clear but not connected to role readiness; 5: truthful, appropriately bounded, and focused on current qualifications.
Coaching rule
You can keep personal reasons private. Do not claim credentials or work that you did not have.
Sample answer framework
Adapt only with truthful details from your own experience. Replace every bracketed prompt; omit any claim that is not accurate.
I had a gap from [timeframe] for [brief reason I am comfortable sharing]. During that time, I [true activity, if relevant]. I am prepared for [specific role requirement] because [accurate evidence].
Practice exercise
Prepare both a one-sentence private explanation and a role-focused follow-up. Check that the explanation is accurate and does not disclose information you do not want to share.
Follow-up questions that may probe for more evidence
- Practice this follow-up: What skills or activities have you kept current?
- Practice this follow-up: Are you able to meet the schedule and requirements of this role?
- Practice this follow-up: What would help you succeed as you return to this kind of work?
