Walk me through how you build a budget or forecast.

Read first: a sample answer

Fictional sample answer written by JoRoute to show the shape of a strong answer. Do not copy it: replace every detail with what is true for you.

I build a budget in Excel from last year's actuals, then adjust each line with a stated assumption. For example, for a 40-person team in 2023 I used headcount plans for salaries, signed contracts for rent and a 4% inflation assumption for supplies. I keep inputs, calculations and outputs on separate sheets so anyone can check them. Each month I compare actuals with the budget and update the forecast. That technical method kept our year-end variance under 2%.

Use only details that are true for you. The benchmark below is fictional.
