The Resume File
Daniel follows a suspicious reference number and discovers a false lead. He learns to separate evidence from fear.
Daniel opened the résumé he had submitted. Near the bottom, a reference number caught his eye. For a few minutes, he wondered whether the recruiter had planted it to track him.
He compared the original file with the version exported from the job board. The number came from an ordinary export setting. It was not evidence of a hack, and it did not explain the suspicious messages.
Daniel felt embarrassed by how quickly his imagination had filled the gap. But the mistake was useful: if he wanted to understand what was happening, he needed to separate what he knew from what he feared.
He created two columns. Confirmed facts: three messages used the same phrase; the recruiter could not be verified; the job code did not appear on the official site; the application form used a different domain. Open questions: who created the messages, how the sender found him, and whether the contacts were connected.
Then he improved his résumé. It was accurate, but the most relevant skills were buried under long descriptions of old responsibilities. He rewrote several bullets with clearer verbs and removed unnecessary personal details. He invented no metrics, inflated no titles, and claimed no work he had not done.
Later, the recruiter sent a screenshot quoting a sentence from an older résumé version.
Daniel stared at it. His profile had been public on a job board, so the sender might have found it there. But he could not prove that was the source. He saved the screenshot and marked the origin as unknown.
Put it to work
Fiction. This is a work of fiction. Daniel and every person, message and event in the story are invented. It does not describe a real JoRoute user, and no real employer, recruiter or platform is involved. Job code NX-8841 is made up too.
